When placed on its left hand edge the main lines of the design form the initials of the Lower Hutt Women’s Centre. The elements are represented. Swimming, flying, women walking and camping, dancing, planting, metamorphosis, water, souls boats, boats themselves, fishing, fire, phoenix – are all symbols I connect in some way with growth, empowerment and change. I used the image or idea of witches on broomsticks pretty loosely. The women are free flying and broomsticks floating hearby. A sort of ‘look mum – no hands" metaphor for empowerment – flying without our broomsticks. There are no land mammals other than women. Women become part of the life cycles more this way. Also there are no indigenous land mammals in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
